| Brown School is a non-sectarian
institution and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender or
national origin. Children currently in attendance, who continue to meet
performance standards, are offered the first opportunity for enrollment each
year. Applications are accepted at any time. Registration begins after January
1. Occasionally, openings are filled during the school year.
A meeting with the Director, Assistant Director, and/or Admissions Director
is required of every applicant in K-8. All candidates submit an application with
appropriate fee and provide required documentation, including a written
agreement authorizing release of records. Any required observations or
conferences will be completed prior to acting on an application. Brown School's
Admissions Committee determines the acceptance or denial of each applicant.
If a child is receiving any special service, such as speech therapy,
occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc., a full report from the service
provider(s) must be forwarded to Brown School prior to acceptance. Full
disclosure of such services must be provided prior to consideration for
admission.
Admission to Nursery/Pre-K & Kindergarten
Applicants for the nursery program must be 3 years of age by December 1 of
the year of attendance. Applicants for the pre-Kindergarten program must be 4
years of age by December 1 of the year attending. Nursery and pre-K children
must be toilet trained (i.e., children have progressed beyond diapers or
pull-ups). Brown School reserves the right to evaluate students for their
developmental readiness for the nursery and pre-K programs.
A child must be five years of age by December 1 to be admitted to
kindergarten. Brown School reserves the right to assess developmental readiness
for our kindergarten program. If a child is attending or has attended another
preschool or day care program, any available evaluations may be obtained. An
observation at the child's former program, and/or a conference with a prior care
provider may be requested. A Brown School visit and/or a probationary period may
be required prior to regular admission. All decisions regarding admission are at
the discretion of the Admissions Committee.
Admission to Grades One through Eight
A child entering these grades shall be asked to spend a day at Brown School
with the grade that he/she is currently attending. An evaluation of the
applicant will be obtained from the most recent teacher and/or principal of the
candidate's previous school. A telephone conference with them may also be
needed.
Applicants entering grades 4-8 will be given an individual assessment test in
the areas of mathematics, reading comprehension, and writing unless otherwise
exempt. Information obtained from all of the above shall be reviewed by the
Admissions Committee. A probationary period may be required prior to regular
admission. All decisions regarding admission are at the discretion of the
Admissions Committee.
